Shunning is a tool of silencing and control, one that protects those who inflict harmful ideology on others. Leaders harshly punish any who question their methods/interpretations, while they question the motives and mental capacities of those who have doubts. For religious groups, it has little to do with members' relationship with God and Christ and everything to do with belief in and obedience to leaders' teachings.
Those trapped in high-control groups are prevented from openly airing their concerns or questioning teachings. To do so would mean being branded an apostate and being cut off from friends and family still in the group.
Raising awareness and working to bring about change is the very best response to harmful ideology.

"United We Stand" Walk Out Anti-Shunning Campaign
No practice can exist without perpetrators and participants. The same holds true for shunning, a form of spiritual blackmail perpetrated by those in positions of power and reinforced via participants. While certain groups may teach others to shun friends and family, with no participants, shunning would come to an end.
To illustrate: a supposed spiritual shepherd (perpetrator) could be driving a train but forward momentum would be impossible if participants slammed on the breaks and the wheels stopped turning.
